A Short Guide To Working With Acrylic Sheets

Posted on: 25 July 2023

An acrylic sheet is a very versatile material that has a whole variety of uses. You need to know how to work with it correctly, however, if you do not want to damage it. Here is an explanation of how to use acrylic sheets.

Cutting

The best way to make sure your acrylic sheet is the correct size is to have it cut to shape when you buy it. This will prevent any mistakes or accidents. If you decide to cut it yourself, you will need to use a fine-toothed circular saw or jigsaw. It is best to mark out the line of the cut with masking tape first. Do this along the top and the bottom, and make sure you use tape that is wide enough to protect the sheet from the sole of the saw. Do not apply too much pressure as you cut; the saw should do the work, not your muscles.

Drilling

Drilling holes in acrylic is another task that is easier to have done in advance before you buy the sheet. To drill your own holes, you should use a variable-speed drill with high-speed steel bits. You should use a piece of masking tape if you want to mark the position of the hole, as you could scratch the plastic if you draw directly onto the sheet. Make sure the plastic sheet is on a flat surface that you can drill into, such as a piece of wood, or is securely clamped onto slats so that the drill can emerge into the gap. Again, you should not use any force but should let the tool do the work.

Finishing

You will not have to worry about finishing the edges if the sheet has been custom cut. If, on the other hand, you have cut it yourself, you will need to sand away the marks that you have left at the edge. These are called kerf marks and are an inevitable result of sawing through acrylic. You should start sanding with a fairly rough grain and should progress to a finer grain. The edges should be smooth and even and without any marks from the cutting process.

Working with acrylic is not difficult and you should not have difficulty cutting and finishing your sheets if you follow the correct procedure. Remember though that buying cut-to-size acrylic sheets is a sensible way of avoiding having to carry out these tasks.
